The Portuguese subspecies became extinct in 1892, and the Pyrenean subspecies became extinct in 2000. The species was often seen in parts of France, Portugal, Spain and Andorra, but not as much in northern areas of the Iberian Peninsula. In areas like Andorra and France in the mainland, the Pyrenean ibex became extinct first in the northern tip of the Iberian Peninsula.
